  • Knife and cutting board
  • Deep frying pan or pot
  • Tongs or slotted spoon
  • Paper towels
  • Plate or tray
  • Thermometer (optional but helpful)

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions sliced into thick rings
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 cup cold water or milk
  • Oil for frying

Optional:

  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper for heat

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Onions

  • Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings. Separate each ring and set aside.

Step 2: Heat the Oil

  • Heat oil in a deep pan to 175°C (350°F). Maintaining the right temperature is key for crispy results.

Step 3: Make the Batter

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  • Gradually add cold water or milk while whisking until you get a smooth, slightly thick batter.

Step 4: Coat the Rings

  • Dip each onion ring into the batter, making sure it’s fully coated.

Step 5: Fry

  • Carefully place the coated rings into the hot oil. Fry in batches for 2–3 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

Step 6: Drain

  • Remove the onion rings and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.

Step 7: Serve
