Step 1: Prepare the Base

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the cornstarch, sugar, and salt. Mix well to ensure everything is evenly distributed.

Step 2: Add Liquid

  • Slowly pour in the water while stirring continuously. Add the vanilla extract if using. The mixture should become smooth and slightly thick, similar to a loose paste.

Step 3: Cook the Mixture

  • Place a non-stick pan over medium heat. Add the butter or oil, then pour in the mixture. Stir constantly as it thickens. This step requires patience—the mixture will go from runny to thick quite quickly.

Step 4: Form the Dough

  • Once the mixture becomes thick and dough-like, remove it from the heat. Let it cool slightly so it’s easier to handle.

Step 5: Shape the Chunks

  • Transfer the dough onto a flat surface. Cut or shape it into small chunks or bite-sized pieces.

Step 6: Cook the Chunks

  • You can either:
  • Fry them in a pan until lightly golden and crispy, or
  • Bake them at 180°C (350°F) for 10–12 minutes

Step 7: Finish and Serve

  • Dust with powdered sugar if desired. Serve warm for the best texture.
